Aerating & Seeding

Lawn Aeration

Aeration is an essential step in caring for your lawn. Fescue, Bermuda, and Zoysia turf grasses all benefit from this service. Its all about the roots! Core aeration is just what it sounds like. We use a state of the art Stinger GT30 machine to pull 2-4″ cores out of the soil beneath the lawn. Golf courses, sports turf facilities, and the best looking lawns in your neighborhood are performing aeration services annually, as part of their lawncare programs. Here are just a few of the reasons your lawn loves being aerated:

  • Improved gas exchange between the soil and atmosphere. Now your turf grass roots can breathe again!
  • Thatch breakdown. A thick thatch layer on your lawn acts to suffocate it. Aerating breaks through this thatch layer.
  • Reduce soil compaction. This promotes root growth.
  • Increase soil fertility. Allows the turf to better absorb nutrients from fertilizer applications.
  • Reduces waterlogging by improving soil drainage.
  • Allows for improved seed to soil contact when doing an overseeding application.
  • When performed annually, lawn aeration keeps your lawn at peak performance and improves overall color and density.

Seeding

Seeding your lawn will help keep it looking its best. Seeding at the time of your aeration service is optimal so as to achieve improved seed to soil contact. Our state of the art Stinger GT30 aerator is equipped with a seed box and can accurately apply seed down the pound per thousand square feet of lawn. This accuracy is achieved by dropping the seed directly down to the lawn, not spreading it. This means that as a core of soil is pulled, seed is dropped, and optimal seed soil contact is achieved. We are able to apply seed at any rate desired (higher rates to establish turf in bare soil, lower rates for overseeding established lawns). Below are some seeding facts:
  • Seeding on an annual basis is proven to keep your lawn at peak performance and improves overall color and density.
  • Fescue lawns are often damaged by heat and drought. Seeding them is the only method to correct the damage.
  • Seeding to establish a lawn can save you thousands vs. a sod installation.
  • Improves the overall appearance by promoting healthier turf.
  • Increases lawn cushioning, making the lawn more resilient to foot traffic or other wear and tear.

Combining Aeration & Seeding

These two service are like peanut butter and jelly. They just go together. Aerating disturbs the soil allowing for optimal seed to soil contact. The only scenario that we would not recommend a combination service is for Bermuda and Zoysia lawns. These two turf grass benefit greatly from aeration but seeding is just not necessary with their growth habits. Aeration AND seeding is an essential part of every Fescue turf grass program.
